 In San Diego, GHG emissions from buildings are second only to transportation when accounting for the electricity and natural gas consumed in our homes and businesses. Burning natural gas accounts for 20 percent of local GHG emissions through its use to heat our homes, offices and our water. 

The answer is decarbonization. In Strategy 1 of the CAP (“Decarbonization of the Built Environment”) decarbonization is defined as the removal of carbon from a system, with a focus on the source with the greatest potential for reduction: natural gas or methane.

The City of San Diego is leading by example by supporting Strategy 1 through the Municipal Energy Strategy (MES) and the Municipal Energy Implementation Plan (the Plan).
