Volunteer Opportunities
READ/San Diego offers numerous opportunities for volunteer service. Training is provided in each of the following areas:
Adult literacy tutor (provide one-to-one or small group tutoring for adults, 18 years of age and older, in reading, writing, and/or math skills)
Computer lab facilitator (assist volunteer tutors and adult learners in accessing and using instructional software programs and the Internet at READ/San Diego's computer lab at Malcolm X Library)
Assessment counselor (conduct intake interviews and administer placement tests of incoming students, and assess progress of current or departing students)
Office assistant (provide general office assistance in support of READ/San Diego's staff)
Families for Literacy (FFL) program assistant (assist FFL Coordinator with FFL programs at the City Heights/Weingart or Malcolm X Branch Libraries)
Data entry assistant (enter data in READ/San Diego's database, LiteracyPro)
Learning center manager (manage day-to-day operations of neighborhood, recovery or work- place literacy programs and coordinate the tutor/learner matches)
Program assistant (assist Tutor/Learner Coordinators in matching volunteer tutors and adult learners, and conduct follow up)
Library materials processor (assist the staff in making instructional materials available to patrons in a timely manner, by processing new books and audio cassettes, and by tracking circulated materials)
Speakers Bureau (speak publicly on behalf of READ/San Diego)
Graphic designer (assist with the publication of newsletters and other promotional materials)
Member of the Friends of READ/San Diego Literacy Programs (the Friends are a non-profit corporation dedicated to supporting READ/San Diego)
