One of San Diego's first master-planned communities, Tierrasanta was founded in 1971, and the first library opened in 1979 as a 1,200-square-foot building with just 6,000 volumes in the collection. Construction on a larger building began two years later, and the current library opened in 1984. A 2019 renovation increased the library size with the addition of a seminar room and reading patio and an expansion of the library community room. Approximately 70,900 materials now comprise the library's collection, and with several schools in the area, juvenile materials account for half of the annual circulation.
