2024 Ramadan
The holy month of Ramadan is celebrated by Muslims in many countries around the world and is a time of introspection. Ramadan occurs on the 9th month of the Islamic lunar calendar. For about 11 days per solar year, Muslims fast to remind themselves of those less fortunate and to strengthen their relationship with their faith. During each day of Ramadan, fasting means to abstain from eating or drinking during daylight. Muslims break their dawn to dusk fast with a community-focused meal called Iftar. In 2024, the calculated expected dates of Ramadan (depending on location and moon-sightings) begin during the evening on Sunday, March 10, 2024, and end on Tuesday, April 9, 2024. Eid al-Fitr, or the “Festival of Breaking the Fast,” commemorates the end of the holy Ramadan month. Muslims gather and take part in different activities, such as engaging in social events, feasts, prayers, and acts of charity. The holiday will be observed on Wednesday, April 10, 2024. San Diego Public Library hopes you can celebrate and learn about Ramadan during our events.
