Volunteers and Unpaid Interns
Volunteers or unpaid interns are eligible for the MTS U-Pass which provides unlimited access to MTS bus and Trolley services, at no cost, for as long as they are actively working for the City.

U-Pass Services
The U-Pass is valid for all fixed-route MTS bus and Trolley services, including Rapid Express 280/290 service on I-15. The U-pass is not valid for door-to-door paratransit trips, or on North County Transit District (NCTD) BREEZE, SPRINTER or COASTER services.
U-Pass First Month Enrollment Steps

Complete and return the Monthly Employment/Work Status Report to TAPAdmin@sandiego.gov. For current month requests, TAP administration will activate your MTS U-Pass within three business days of receipt of your Work status report.

You will receive a confirmation email once your MTS pass is activated, along with instructions for activating the pass using the PRONTO app.
- Once you complete the activation steps, you will be able to use your pass right away.
Your pass will only be valid for the month that it was requested for. Please complete the monthly renewal steps below to ensure your pass is valid for the month following.
U-Pass Monthly Renewal Steps
If you are currently enrolled in the U-Pass program and you would like to keep your pass activated for the following month, complete and return the Monthly Employment/Work Status Report to TAPAdmin@sandiego.gov by the 25th of the current month to ensure your pass remains valid for the following month (i.e. complete by November 25th for December). If your completed Work Status Report is not received by the 25th of the current month, your pass will be deactivated for the following month.
