Supporting Menstrual Equity
The City of San Diego supports menstrual equity and proudly presents the Free4ME pilot program providing FREE menstrual products (tampons and pads) at 48 facilities. Free4ME dispensers are located in public restrooms at City Libraries, Pool Facilities, and Teen Centers. Free4ME will support San Diegans in combatting period poverty, destigmatizing menstrual hygiene, and eliminating barriers to services and programs.
Our goal is to increase access to menstrual products to assist people who may be struggling between affording food, necessities, and hygiene products.
Nearly two-thirds of low-income people with periods in the U.S. report having been unable to afford menstrual products during the previous year, and frequently must decide between purchasing food or other necessities and menstrual products. This is referred to as period poverty and disproportionately impacts people experiencing homelessness, transgender people, youth and low-income individuals.
