Project Overview

Constructed in 1914, the Georgia Street Bridge and the adjacent retaining walls are designated as a historic landmark. The bridge and retaining walls require seismic retrofitting and rehabilitation.

The seismic retrofit and rehabilitation work will maintain the historic characteristics of the bridge and retaining walls, and will include: 

• Soil improvements to reinforce the retaining walls
• Arch and column improvements
• Deck slab replacement
• Roadway lowering of University Avenue between Park Boulevard and Florida Street by about two and a half feet to accommodate large trucks traveling under the bridge
• Bridge and wall barrier replacement
• Lighting upgrades
• Pedestrian and bicycle improvements 

These improvements are consistent with goals set forth in the City of San Diego’s (the City) Climate Action Plan, by improving pedestrian and bicycle access and maintaining urban infrastructure while retaining the individual character of the community.

Project construction will accommodate vehicular traffic, pedestrian traffic, local access, and adjacent structures. The contractor will maintain one lane in each direction on University Avenue between Centre Street and Mississippi Street during construction. Detours will be in place.
