The Transportation Department (TD) is responsible for the operation and maintenance of nearly all infrastructure in the public right of way including streets, sidewalks, traffic signals, and street trees. In addition, the TD performs many other functions including traffic safety and service evaluations and engineering analysis of traffic data; managing the Utilities Undergrounding Program; planning and coordinating work in the right of way (ROW) including management of the Street Preservation Ordinance; and keeping communities clean and safe through weed abatement and graffiti cleanup. Through its work, the TD builds out the City’s multi-modal network, moves people and goods through the network, and maintains the network’s ROW, which all function to provide safe and efficient travel across the City for all modes of transit. The Transportation Department is “San Diego at Work” and strives to provide excellent customer service; the Department receives and manages over 10,000 radio transmissions and calls per year to our Public Works Dispatch Center, and our teams are responsible for the highest number of Get it Done cases across the City with over 33% of all requests managed by the Transportation Department annually.

The Department is comprised of three distinct divisions:
