Office of the City Attorney

Gun Violence / GVRO

The City Attorney's office launched an innovative, first-of-its-kind effort in 2017 to make aggressive use of California's "red flag law," or Gun Violence Restraining Orders (GVROs), which allow authorities to remove firearms from people who may be a threat to themselves or others. Since its inception, the Gun Violence Response Unit has successfully disarmed over 1,500 dangerous people - a third of them domestic abusers - and has been credited with averting multiple mass shootings. San Diego's program has become a model around the state and across the nation, with the City Attorney's office now providing training to hundreds of law enforcement agencies thanks to dedicated funding provided in the state budget.
