Everette

Notes

Chaplain Everette is a retired Fire Captain with San Diego Fire-Rescue. He retired in 2016 after 26 years with the department. His last three years were spent in an administrative position as the department's Wellness Officer where he actually oversaw the emerging peer support program.  While working as the Wellness Officer, he realized SDFD had many firefighters that were dealing with personal issues that were considered taboo to talk about with fellow firefighters in the fire station.  Some of those issues consisted of  relationship struggles, difficulty handling finances and substance abuse problems. The firefighter culture has taught us to be tough and to mask weakness so we could effectively handle the demands of the job. As a result of this established culture and mind set, we saw an increase in depression, suicide and we were not providing proper resources to help our fellow brothers and sisters within the department with these life challenges.  Chaplain Everette had the privilege of working with the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) and the local Behavioral Health Agencies to develop a Behavioral Health/Peer Support program. This collaboration of resources was provided to the San Diego City firefighters free of charge and is accessed anonymously.  As such, we want firefighters and Emergency Medical Service (EMS) workers to know that there is help available regardless of what challenges they are facing.  We have worked with our department chaplains in the past for our CISM debriefings, After Action Reviews and Critical Incident Stress Management support.   James Everette is currently serving as the Senior Pastor of Father's House Church International in Spring Valley, California.  He has been married for thirty seven years and has two adult sons.  James’ wife is also retired with a background in Marriage, Family and Child Counseling.  James is able to draw from his wife’s experience to assist him in helping others navigate through the emotional, physical, financial and spiritual trails of life.  It would be his honor to continue to help serve the men and women of the emergency services by giving them an ear to listen to and providing words of encouragement.
