Is a wall still a wall if it never comes to rest: If it’s always under construction and destruction? If instead of blocking space, it moves through and temporarily defines a path? If it brings people together rather than creating separation? Walking the Wall is a performative, participatory artwork that speaks to the mutable character of borders, walls, and the “ownership” of space through a gesture of invitation and collaboration. The work takes the form of a “dancing wall” of boxes, staged on shipping pallets which dancers will move by building and unbuilding through their choreography. Murdoch sees this wall as a drawn line defining a connection rather than a separation barrier. Much like Paul Klee would refer to his drawings as “taking a line for a walk,” or Richard Long would describe his work as “A line made by walking.” The wall becomes a point of mobility and playfulness that shapes space and brings people together in celebration of our uniqueness and similarities.
