Farmers Insurance Open
Each year, in January or February, the PGA Tour hosts the annual Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines. Farmers Insurance Open has been staged on a municipal course since 1968, when Torrey Pines began as the tournament site.
No other golf tournament's purse has increased as much in the last 35 years.
The event began as the San Diego Open in 1952 and moved to Torrey Pines as the Andy Williams San Diego Open in 1968. Tom Weiskopf was the first champion at Torrey Pines.
There has been plenty of memorable action in the tournament over the years: Jack Nicklaus swinging through a monsoon to double-bogey the last hole and win in 1969; five single-stroke victories in the 1970s; Tiger Woods' course and tournament-tying record scores in 1999 and wins in 2003, 2005, 2006, and 2007. Past champions include Arnold Palmer (1957 and 1961), Gary Player (1963), Tom Watson (1977 and 1981), Johnny Miller (1982), Mark O'Meara (1997), Phil Mickelson (2000, 2001) and Jose Maria Olazabel (2002).The Farmers Insurance Open is played on both of the PGA Championship North and South courses. The final two rounds are played on the South course.
