SAN DIEGO – Mayor Todd Gloria, chair of the California Big City Mayors coalition, issued the following statement on the California Supreme Court’s ruling striking down a proposed ballot measure by the California Business Roundtable that would have raised the threshold for voter-initiated special tax measures to two-thirds:
“We applaud the California Supreme Court for rejecting this ill-conceived effort by special interests to dilute the power of voters and erode the authority vested in local governments by the California Constitution. By striking down this measure, the Court has safeguarded the capacity of cities to deliver the essential public services our residents expect -- police and fire emergency services, road maintenance, trash pickup, clean drinking water, parks and libraries – without unnecessary impediments. This ruling is a victory for good governance and the well-being of our communities.”
