SAN DIEGO Continuing his commitment to create inviting and walkable public spaces throughout the City of San Diego, Mayor Todd Gloria was joined by City Councilmember Raul Campillo on Saturday, May 29, to officially open the new Villa Monserate Neighborhood Park in Tierrasanta.
The residents of Tierrasanta came together and told the City what kind of improvements they wanted in Villa Monserate Park, and the City delivered, Mayor Gloria said. Councilmember Campillo and I will continue to champion projects like this that make parks and other city facilities more accessible for all of us.
Villa Monserate Neighborhood Park was first built in 1975. Located on Robusto Road in the Tierrasanta community, the park improvements feature two new playground structures with safety surfacing, new picnic tables and seating areas, a picnic shelter and landscaping and irrigation improvements. The approximately $1.7 million project took nearly one year to construct.
This new and improved tot lot for the community of Tierrasanta was sorely needed, Councilmember Campillo said. I am happy that together with Mayor Gloria, we were able to deliver this much-needed upgrade to serve all the children and families in our community.
Improvements to walking paths around the park provide for increased access for visitors of all abilities and compliance with ADA requirements.
Todays park reopening caps off a busy month for Mayor Glorias goal to increase and upgrade park spaces across the City. Earlier this month, Mayor Gloria kicked off construction to revamp the underused Childrens Park downtown into a sprawling multi-use park. He also broke ground on the La Paz Mini Park project, which will transform a vacant dirt lot into an engaging park tucked in the Valencia Park neighborhood.
