SAN DIEGO – Mayor Todd Gloria today issued the following statement on the results of the annual Point-in-Time Count, the early-morning enumeration exercise that provides an annual snapshot of homelessness:

“This year’s Point in Time Count results are one of several indicators that our sustained efforts to increase homeless shelter capacity and get people off the street is turning the tide on this crisis.

“While this trend is promising, it is further proof that now is not the time to retreat or become stagnant in our efforts to address homelessness, but rather to double down. It is all the more reason why the City of San Diego must follow through on my proposal to add 1,000 shelter beds to our homeless services system, transform H Barracks into a Safe Parking lot for people living in their vehicles, and continue to build more housing.

“Homelessness can only be solved with an unwavering commitment to the measures that work.”

Actions Mayor Gloria has taken to address homelessness:

  • Expanded street outreach
  • More than doubled the number of options unsheltered San Diegans have to get off the streets
  • Expanded the Safe Parking Program
  • Launched a Safe Sleeping Program at two sites
  • Passed a Tenant Protection Ordinance to help people at risk of eviction remain in their homes
  • Created a legal-assistance fund for people at risk of eviction
  • Taken numerous actions to spur the production of affordable housing:
    • Two Housing Action Packages to make it easier to build affordable housing
    • Bridge to Home, an initiative to help affordable housing builders with gap-financing assistance
    • An executive order requiring the City to speed up permitting of affordable housing
  • Successfully advocated for statewide behavioral health reforms, such as CARE Court and conservatorship reform
