SAN DIEGO Consistent with his commitment to invest in quality-of-life improvements in historically underserved neighborhoods, Mayor Gloria today was joined by District 4 City Councilmember Monica Montgomery Steppe to break ground on the new La Paz Mini Park, a transformational neighborhood project in Valencia Park.

Located at the corner of La Paz Drive and San Bernardo Terrace, the project site is currently a vacant dirt lot that provides no recreation opportunities for the community.

Allofourcommunities need and deserveabundant parkand greenspace. They provide places for our children to play,opportunities to get some exercise, trees to cool our communities and spaces for neighbors to come together, Mayor Gloria said.By next spring,thischunk of dirtand weedsin one of our underserved neighborhoods will be transformedinto a beautiful parkthat families from the surrounding community can enjoy.

When completed, the La Paz Mini Park will offer a variety of new amenities, including a shade structure, plentiful trees, two new play-area structures, fitness equipment, security lighting and accessibility improvements for people with disabilities.

With a lens on equity, I have been prioritizing parks and libraries in District 4, as well as other public assets, said Councilmember Montgomery Steppe. There has been inadequate investment in our neighborhood parks and libraries for years, and this $2.6 million investment for the planning, design and construction of our new mini park is a step in the right direction for equitable investment in our communities of concern.

The La Paz Mini Park is anticipated to be open in mid-2022. The project is being funded with fees that developers pay to promote civic benefits.
