Mayor Gloria Announces Board Appointments

SAN DIEGO – Mayor Todd Gloria today announced the following appointments:

Martin Armstrong has been appointed to the Parks and Recreation Board. Mr. Armstrong is a landscape architect and urban planner with 25 years of industry experience. His background includes environmental restoration, regional parks and trails design development, urban infill, design-build, community workshops, project entitlement process, construction drawings, and construction observation. He has worked on a variety of projects, including recreational parks, streetscapes, model units, and private residences throughout Central and Southern California. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture from California Polytechnic State University. Mr. Armstrong is a resident of Bay Ho, and is being appointed for a two-year term ending March 1, 2025.

Dr. Andrea Dooley has been appointed to the Parks and Recreation Board. Dr. Dooley is the Assistant Dean of Education Administration for the Division of Medical Education at UC San Diego School of Medicine. Prior to Dr. Dooley’s current position, she served as the Senior Associate Vice President for Student Affairs at San Diego State University (SDSU) and the Assistant Vice Chancellor and Chief of Staff for the Division of Student Affairs at UC Berkeley. She holds a bachelor's degree in social science, a master's degree in education with an emphasis in postsecondary leadership and a doctoral degree in educational leadership from SDSU. Dr. Dooley is a resident of Allied Gardens, and is being appointed for a two-year term ending March 1, 2025.

Dr. Judith Muñoz has been appointed to the Parks and Recreation Board. Dr. Muñoz is a retired Vice President of the Scripps Research Institute. Previously, she was an administrator at the University of California at San Diego and the University of San Diego. She has served in leadership positions on several professional nonprofit boards, including the Petco Foundation, San Diego Hospice, the Centre for Organizational Effectiveness, the San Diego Natural History Museum, the Clairemont Town Council, and the San Diego Humane Society. Dr. Muñoz holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree from the University of Oregon and a doctorate from the University of San Diego. Dr. Muñoz is a resident of Clairemont, and is being appointed for a two-year term ending March 1, 2025.

Agatha Wein has been appointed to the Parks and Recreation Board. Ms. Wein is an accomplished outreach and engagement professional with a technical background in geoscience and over 15 years of experience in public engagement on energy and climate policy. She recently served as a Local Government and Community Liaison at the California Public Utilities Commission, where she led local engagement and community participation efforts in the southern California border region. Ms. Wein holds a Bachelor of Science in Earth Sciences and Physics from the University of California San Diego and a Master of Science in Geophysics from the University of California, San Diego. Ms. Wein is a resident of Mountain View, and is being appointed to a two-year term ending March 1, 2025.

Nick Anastasopoulos has been reappointed to the Parks and Recreation Board. Mr. Anastasopoulos, for over 20 years, served as a restaurateur of Athens Market Cafe. Prior to this role, he served as Director of the Boys and Girls Club in Costa Mesa and San Diego and worked in commercial flooring. He has actively served on numerous boards and committees, including serving on the Character Counts Coalition Foundation, serving as president of the Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation and the Rancho Bernardo Recreation Council. Mr. Anastasopoulos has a Bachelor of Arts in Recreation Administration from San Diego State University. He is a resident of Rancho Bernardo, and is being appointed for a two-year term ending March 1, 2026.

Dr. Marcella Bothwell has been reappointed to the Parks and Recreation Board. Dr. Bothwell is a retired Clinical Professor of Surgery and Pediatric Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery at UC San Diego School of Medicine, and 2014 MBA graduate of the Rady School of Management. She received her medical degree from University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine. Dr. Bothwell is a resident of Pacific Beach, and is being appointed a two-year term ending March 1, 2026.

Shaina Gross has been reappointed to the Parks and Recreation Board. Ms. Gross is the vice president of Client Services at the San Diego Workforce Partnership. Prior to that, she was the President and CEO of the Susan G. Komen Foundation. She is a member of numerous organizations serving in a variety of capacities, including Women Give San Diego, the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce, the San Diego Workforce Partnership and the San Diego Grantmakers. Ms. Gross holds a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and English Concentration and a Master of Public Health from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is a resident of San Carlos, and is being appointed for a two-year term ending March 1, 2026.

Daniele Laman has been reappointed to the Parks and Recreation Board. Ms. Laman is a decades-long volunteer with numerous non-profits and local planning groups. She has served on the Chollas Lake Little League Board, the Chollas Lake Recreation Council, the Colina del Sol Recreation Council, the Ken-Tal Planning Group, and the Eastern Area Community Planning Group. She has been a member and delegate liaison of House Pacific Relations International Cottages and an active public participant of the Balboa Park Committee and Parks and Recreation Board. Ms. Laman has a Bachelor of Arts from San Diego State University. She is a resident of Talmadge, and is being appointed for a two-year term ending March 1, 2026.

The appointments were confirmed at the Tuesday, June 11 City Council meeting.
