SAN DIEGO Following the San Diego City Councils decision to validate Measure C a 2020 citizens initiative that would raise the tourism occupancy tax (TOT) to expand the San Diego Convention Center, create a dedicated funding stream for homelessness and repair roads, Mayor Todd Gloria issued this statement:
Todays affirmative vote by the City Council to validate Measure C is a necessary step to finally put to bed the long-awaited and much-discussed expansion of our Convention Center in addition to addressing two of our citys most significant challenges: combatting homelessness and getting San Diegans back to work. The people of San Diego asked us to take up this measure and an overwhelming majority voted to support it. Its time we implement the will of the voters.
Nearly two-thirds of San Diego voters said yes to the measure, but recent legal rulings made it clear that a simple majority was all that was needed to pass. Todays action will ensure that the courts provide a decision on the validity of Measure C, so that San Diego can move forward with implementing the measure.
