SAN DIEGO A bipartisan coalition of leaders from across San Diego County today expressed its sincere appreciation for the efforts of San Diegos congressional delegation, who secured more than $107 million for local community projects as part of the federal appropriations bill for fiscal year 2022.
I want to thank our congressional delegation for continuing to successfully advocate for our City and our region, San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria said. I especially want to thank Senator Feinstein and Congressmembers Jacobs and Vargas for bringing funding home for four community projects in the city of San Diego, totaling $2.4 million. I know these projects will help make a direct difference in the lives of San Diegans and help continue to move our community forward.
Senators Dianne Feinstein and Alex Padilla and Congressmembers Juan Vargas, Scott Peters, Mike Levin and Sara Jacobs continue to deliver for the region, as they did in 2021 when they voted to pass the American Rescue Plan, which provided critical resources to help set the region on a path to a post-pandemic recovery. The one-time community project funds will help various government, transit, planning and nonprofit entities finance 26 infrastructure, health and human services, childcare, and research projects throughout San Diego County.
Our Congressional delegation fought for San Diegos fair share of federal funding, and our communities are the winners, said Nathan Fletcher, chair of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors. Working families will now have more access to childcare, our transportation systems will be enhanced and significant infrastructure needs will be addressed. I want to thank the entire delegation, and especially Representative Sara Jacobs for working with the County to expand childcare capacity in San Diego County.
Senators Feinstein and Padilla and Congressman Mike Levin truly understand our community needs, Oceanside Mayor Esther Sanchez said. Thanks to their efforts, the City of Oceanside received more than $2.8 million to help our community address homelessness and public safety. We are truly grateful for their efforts to bring more federal investment to our community.
"Safer streets, cleaner oceans and better air quality all possible when our region works together, locally and in Washington, Carlsbad Mayor Matt Hall said. The City of Carlsbad appreciates the work of our representatives and senators, who came together to secure funding for projects that will significantly improve our local quality of life and economy.
Thanks to the leadership of our congressional delegation, SANDAG is receiving more than $15 million to stabilize the Del Mar bluffs, build out the Bayshore Bikeway and move forward with the Palomar grade separation in the city of Chula Vista, said SANDAG Chair and Encinitas Mayor Catherine Blakespear. This is a fantastic way to kickstart the 2021 Regional Plan and move us one step closer to meeting our mobility, climate and economic goals.
Thanks to Congressman Peters and our local delegation, Poway is in a position to enhance public safety and quality of life with the community project funding grants, Poway Mayor Steve Vaus said. With their help, the City will reduce fire hazards along key evacuation routes and improve water reliability for generations to come. Those investments in our community are only possible thanks to their support, and for that we are deeply grateful.
The Port of San Diego is grateful to Representative Peters and our entire San Diego congressional delegation for helping us address the impacts of sea-level rise along our beautiful waterfront, said Dan Malcolm, chair of the Port of San Diegos Board of Port Commissioners. Once additional approvals are obtained, the funding will be used to pilot and replace traditional shoreline armoring like riprap along portions of San Diego Bay with more durable and sustainable materials that will enhance local ecosystems, shoreline protection and habitat biodiversity in the bay.
MTS appreciates the hard work of our congressional delegation to secure funding for so many worthy projects, said Sharon Cooney, CEO of the Metropolitan Transit System. Converting the entire 750-bus fleet to all-electric is a top priority at MTS. This funding will go a long way toward building the infrastructure necessary to make it happen as quickly as possible.
We appreciate the congressional delegation ensuring federal funds were secured to help improve our region, said North County Transit District Executive Director Matthew O. Tucker. The $1.7 million for hydrogen fueling infrastructure is a significant step towards providing clean transportation choices and improving air quality for our customers. Representative Levin, who helped deliver these funds, is a true advocate for public transportation and we are thankful for his support.
