Civic Dance Arts Program

Founded in 1942, the Civic Dance Arts Program of the City of San Diego Parks & Recreation Department has introduced hundreds of thousands of citizens to the art form of dance. Classes are currently offered at 22 city recreation centers and Balboa Park facilities at affordable prices, with fees waived in some cases. This enables children and adults from all economic and cultural backgrounds to fully participate in the study of dance. Our class schedule is updated three times a year (Fall, Spring, Summer) so, please check back towards the beginning of each session for updates.

Beginning- Pre-professional level instruction is offered in disciplines such as jazz, tap, ballet, modern, hip hop and musical theater. In addition to our ongoing classes, there are affordable Summer camps for youth and specialty workshops and master classes offered throughout the year such as our Adult Workshop, Workshops for our performing level groups and Boys Day of Dance. Civic Dance Arts emulates the highest standards of nationally renowned private and non-profit programs; a program which now attracts the highest caliber instructional and student talent while providing instruction at the least cost in the community.

San Diego Civic Dance Company

During the 1980s, in response to an overwhelming demand for recreational activities in the arts, an advanced studies program was initiated resulting in the formation of the San Diego Civic Dance Company. This is a performing group of 30 to 40 dancers admitted by audition and incorporation of the San Diego Civic Dance Association, a non-profit support organization.

The Company performs in concert at the Casa del Prado Theatre in Balboa Park for three weeks in February each year. All dancers enrolled in the program can perform in one of 14 recital concerts produced at that theatre in June. Also, Company dancers accommodate community service and City organizations' requests for entertainment and concert performances when their calendar permits. Enrollment averages 2,900 students.

This cultural program has been the crown jewel of this City's recreational offerings continuously for 55 years. Thousands of children look upon their dance experiences with the City's Parks & Recreation Department as a never-to-be-forgotten joy of childhood and enroll their own children in the program. Many have not strayed far from the arts for career choices, but nearly all feel their lives have been enriched by participation in this activity.
