Celebrate Pride 2024 at the San Diego Public Library

San Diegans of all ages are invited to celebrate Pride 2024 with the City of San Diego Public Library (SDPL). The library has a full week of Pride-themed storytimes and crafts planned across its 36 branches and at the Pride Festival at Balboa Park. SDPL will also offer a limited-edition library card that reflects this year’s Pride theme: “Making History Now.”

SDPL workers will join other libraries and local educators as Community Grand Marshals of this year’s Pride parade. San Diego Pride recognized the region’s LGBTQIA+ and Allied Educators and Library Workers for their ongoing support of the LGBTQIA+ community.

“The San Diego Public Library is a place where anyone can come and see their stories reflected in the books and programming,” said Library Director Misty Jones. “We’re honored to be recognized along with fellow librarians and educators as an inclusive space that celebrates the diversity of San Diego’s LGBTQIA+ community.”

As part of this year’s celebration, SDPL will host a family-friendly Pride-themed storytime on Wednesday, July 17, at 10:30 a.m. at the Oak Park Library. The program will celebrate diversity and individuality through age-appropriate stories and songs. The library will also host storytimes, activities and workshops at the annual Lit Café at the Pride Festival at Balboa Park. A commemorative library Pride fan is also available at the Lit Café while supplies last.

For the fifth year in a row, SDPL will offer a limited-edition Pride library card. This year’s winning design was created by Jenn David Connolly. It celebrates the 50th anniversary of San Diego Pride.

“The first San Diego Pride parade was in celebration of the 1969 Stonewall Rebellion in New York City. The brick texture on the card is in honor of the Stonewall Inn’s brick front,” said Connolly. “The confetti and festive elements celebrate all the progress that has been made for Pride in San Diego since that first march, and the hearts and rainbow colors celebrate love of all kinds.”

Patrons can pick up the Pride library card for free at any library location starting Saturday, July 13, while supplies last. The card will also be available at the SDPL Lit Café at the San Diego Pride Festival.

Visit the SDPL LGBTQIA+ page for more information on the library’s Pride celebrations, books recommendations and community resources.
