Construction crews are wrapping up asphalt overlay work on a 1.2-mile segment of Clairemont Mesa Boulevard from Shawline Street to Kearny Mesa Road this week. 

The work is part of Mayor Todd Gloria's Sexy Streets initiative to give new life to roads in desperate need of repair across the city.

Clairemont Mesa Boulevard is a busy corridor that previously had high concentrations of large potholes. Recent underground pipeline work performed on this road -- combined with the traffic load -- made resurfacing this street necessary.

Streets in San Diego are selected for resurfacing through a pavement management system that helps determine when to schedule streets and which type of repair is appropriate. Each street segment is assigned a Pavement Condition Index (PCI) score based on the pavement’s roughness and cracks.  

Based on the most recent assessment in 2023, the PCI scores for the four segments of Clairemont Mesa Boulevard being overlayed this week were categorized as very poor and very serious. However, after this work is complete, the PCI score will move up to 100.

This fiscal year, the City has completed more than 71 miles of asphalt overlay work, exceeding the original goal of 60 miles.

For next fiscal year, Mayor Gloria’s “Protecting our Progress” budget includes nearly $105 million for street resurfacing construction and design. That investment will increase the number of miles of major street resurfacing to 75 miles in fiscal year 2025 and will fund the design and planning needed to complete 105 miles in fiscal year 2026.
