Fire Station 40 began operation in June 1981. It serves Rancho Peñasquitos and its surrounding areas. Engine 40's district is 13.87 square miles.

Specialty Stations - Ladders

Station 40 is responsible for the repair, maintenance, annual inspection and testing of all ground ladders. The firefighters look for loose rivets or nuts, cracks, or other faults. There are three ladders on each engine and 10 ladders on each truck. In addition to ladders, Station 40 repairs small tools with wooden handles, such as axes and pike poles.
