Bessenti and Sam, Indian / American Homesteaders that were forced to move from Capitan Grande Indian Reservation. The reservation was created by Executive Order in 1875 for local Kumeyaay Indians, controlled by the Barona and Viejas Capitan Grande Bands of Mission Indians. In 1931, the state flooded the heart of the reservation to create the El Capitan Reservoir and forcibly purchased it from the two tribes to provide water for San Diego.
