While a police lieutenant, Sanders was the police academy commander at the San Diego Criminal Justice Training Center - Police Academy at Miramar College. He served in the San Diego police department from 1973 until 1999, serving as Chief of Police from 1993 until 1999. This was given to the mayor to recognize his continuing career achievements and civic service.
