Wooden plaque commemorating the first Stand Down Homeless Veterans Rally in 1988, a grassroots, community-based intervention program designed to help homeless veterans combat life on the streets. The concept was the brain child of two Vietnam veterans living in San Diego, Robert Van Keuren, and Dr. Jon Nachison. The popularity of the event has steadily grown from the original in 1988 to some 80 held yearly throughout the nation. This was presented by Vietnam Veterans of San Diego in July 1988.
