An 8-inch round plate from Japan. Kamakura-bori carving is a traditional carved lacquerware craft from Kamakura in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, with a seven-century-old history. The handicraft originated in the traditional art of Buddhist sculpture and has been handed down to present-day craftsmen. It is made by carving patterns in wood, then lacquering it with layers of colors with Macomo Indian Ink, then polished. Donated by the City of Yokohama, Japan, a San Diego Sister City since 1957.
