In this week’s "From the Mayor’s Desk" newsletter, Mayor Todd Gloria proposed updates to the City’s ADU Density Bonus Program to improve infrastructure, oversight, and fire safety. In this month's "Update on Homelessness and Housing" from Mayor Gloria, learn about how the City is expanding shelter and housing options for San Diegans in need. New and upcoming facilities are providing more beds for families, youth, and seniors, including a 101-bed shelter opening in April and a 210-bed facility serving women and families. and two Bridge to Home-supported projects are also moving forward, bringing more than 100 affordable homes to Serra Mesa and San Carlos.

In this week’s “From the Mayor’s Desk” newsletter, Mayor Gloria introduces “Ask the Mayor,” a new way for San Diegans to ask questions and get direct answers about City policies, priorities, and decisions. Residents can submit questions by emailing askthemayor@sandiego.gov or by subscribing to the newsletter and voting on which questions should be answered each week. The newsletter also highlights new affordable housing projects in Serra Mesa and San Carlos funded through the City’s Bridge to Home initiative, ongoing advocacy for continued state homelessness funding and efforts to embed equity in every City decision, from budgeting to community investment.

Refining Housing Policies, Enhancing Public Safety, and Advancing Equity

In this week’s "From the Mayor’s Desk" newsletter: Mayor Todd Gloria is taking steps to refine its Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) Density Bonus Program to ensure it delivers more housing while addressing community concerns. The mayor and the City Council has also repealed Footnote 7, restoring transparency and public input in land-use decisions in Southeastern San Diego. Plus: Mayor Gloria is backing two state bills to combat human trafficking and improve public safety, alongside coordinated City efforts to enhance conditions in Barrio Logan. A new state bill sponsored by the Mayor, SB 569, would require Caltrans to work with local governments on addressing freeway encampments. The City also remains committed to equity, with millions invested in underserved communities and systemic reforms ensuring fairness in City governance for generations to come.

San Diego Celebrates Soccer Milestone, Housing Progress, and National Recognition

A newly signed law strengthens efforts to preserve affordable housing, ensuring more low-income residents can remain in their homes. The City continues to lead in addressing homelessness, with the latest Homekey project in Mission Valley converting a former extended-stay hotel into 161 new homes. San Diego’s commitment to innovation and sustainability was also recognized nationally, earning What Works Cities Silver Certification for excellence in data-driven government and LEED Gold Certification for leadership in sustainability.

State Funding Supports San Diego’s Efforts to Reduce Homelessness, Safe Parking Growth, and New Housing in San Diego

In this week's "Update on Homelessness and Housing" from Mayor Gloria: San Diego is set to receive more than $25.8 million in state Homeless Housing, Assistance and Prevention (HHAP) funds to continue programs that bring people off the streets and into stable housing. These funds have supported thousands with shelter, outreach, and family reunification. The City is also expanding Safe Parking, opening a new women’s shelter, and investing in affordable housing through our innovative Bridge to Home program.

Plus: Crime is down significantly in San Diego, thanks to smart enforcement strategies and investments in first responders, and Proposition 36 is already strengthening accountability in retail theft and drug-related offenses. Meanwhile, the "I Am San Diego" project is amplifying community voices, preserving personal stories for future generations.

Turning the Tide on Homelessness and Housing

San Diego is making real progress in tackling homelessness and expanding housing opportunities. More people are moving into permanent housing than becoming homeless, thanks to key initiatives like the Safe Sleeping and Safe Parking programs, Homekey investments, and targeted outreach. The City is also driving housing production through innovative policies like the ADU Bonus Program and updated community plans that allow for tens of thousands of new homes near job centers. These efforts are ensuring more San Diegans have a roof over their heads at a price they can afford.
