Mayor Gloria Joins the Mayors Against Illegal Guns Coalition to Create Safer Communities

GLORIA JOINS COALITION OF U.S. MAYORS PUSHING FOR GUN SAFETY AT ALL LEVELS OF GOVERNMENT

SAN DIEGO Delivering on his campaign promise to continue being an advocate against gun violence and for sensible gun safety reforms, Mayor Todd Gloria announced today that he has officially joined the Mayors Against Illegal Guns coalition.

This nation continues to grapple with an epidemic of gun violence and too many San Diego families have been torn apart by it, said Mayor Todd Gloria. Joining this coalition reaffirms my commitment to advance policies that will curb gun violence, promote gun safety, and make our neighborhoods safer.

Mayors Against Illegal Guns is a bipartisan group of more than 1,000 current and former mayors in nearly every state who work together to advance gun safety reform at every level of government. It is an arm of the Everytown for Gun Safety nonprofit, which is the largest gun violence prevention organization in America.

Through the coalitions efforts, mayors will work together to:

  • Advance policies and practices that reduce firearm suicides,
  • Invest in victim services and neighborhood-level violence intervention programs,
  • Implement comprehensive tracing of crime guns,
  • Implement strategies to minimize shootings by police,
  • Use the courts to advance gun safety,
  • And use the purchasing power of government agencies as leverage to improve gun safety.

During Mayor Glorias service in the California State Assembly, he became a recognized leader on gun safety legislation.

In 2019, he authored Assembly Bill 893, which prohibited the sale of guns and ammunition at the Del Mar Fairgrounds and went into effect this year. In 2018, he passed Assembly Bill 2103 -- legislation that regulated concealed carry weapons (CCW) and strengthened requirements for securing a CCW permit. The bill is now law.

Over 35,000 Americans are killed every year due to gun suicide and gun homicide; and nearly 90,000 Americans are injured every year as a result of gun assaults, unintentional shootings, attempted gun suicides, and shootings by law enforcement.
