Russ Public School, established in 1882, was named after lumberman Joseph Russ, who donated the lumber to build it. First serving elementary students, a high school was added in 1888. In 1906 the building was moved several hundred feet to make way for a new building and the original was used for storage until it burned down in 1911. San Diego High School was built on the original site, opening in 1907. It is the oldest California public school still on its original site.
