William Kolender, Chief of Police from 1975 to 1988. Just out of the military, Bill joined the police in 1956 as a new patrolman. Five years later, he became one of the youngest sergeants ever when he was promoted at age 26. By 1965 he was a lieutenant, and in 1975 was second in command and succeeded Chief Ray Hoobler. He created a family-like department that was open to diverse opinions and backgrounds and promoted women and minorities at a rate never before seen. Bill became County Sheriff in 1994 and was reelected three times.
