Terracotta statue of 'Our Lady of the Shoes', created by Mexican artist Carlos Terres and presented to Mayor Golding by Jorge Carlo Obregon, Mayor of Leon, Mexico. Leon is a San Diego Sister City, considered the shoe capital of the world. The statue is located at Mt. Hope Cemetery to maintain a vigil over the graves of the indigent dead. The work of art was inspired by the honorable tradition and legacy that Leon boasts in its leather and shoe industry, as well as Mexico's sacred and widely venerated patron virgin, Our Lady of Guadalupe.
