Shield-shaped 6 x 4-inch wooden plaque with an attached clear glass tube filled with water. A silver plate reads: 'NORTH POLE WATER, Collected by U.S.S. Pintado (SSN-672) 1978'. The ship was commissioned in 1971 and home-ported in San Diego. From September to November 1978, the Pintado operated in the Arctic under the polar ice cap, surfacing at the North Pole on 10 October 1978. This was donated on 5/22/79 by Cmdr. McDonald of the U.S.S. Pintado; occasion information was not provided to the City Clerk's office.
