The JMSDF's main tasks are to maintain control of the nation's sea lanes and to patrol territorial waters. Based in Yokosuka, Japan, they depart each year for long-term training in countries across the globe, periodically visiting the Port of San Diego. This was presented to Mayor Faulconer by Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force Rear Adm. Yasuki Nakahata during a stop-over in San Diego in June 2015.
