How long have you been bicycling and how did you get started?
I grew up playing and riding on bikes. In my early adult life, I lost sight of biking and went for many years without riding one. Then in 2011, I heard about the Bike to Work Day event and was inspired to hop back on my bike and give it a try. I had so much fun biking to work that day - waving and smiling to other cyclists and feeling totally energized when I arrived at work. It was awesome and I was hooked!
What advice would you give to someone looking to get started going by bike?
Take it slow. Start with small trips that are manageable and will help you build confidence on your bike. Invest in a decent bike that fits you well; I found my bike used and it was also reasonably priced.
How do protected bike lanes support your commute?
In the years since I have been biking across San Diego (North Park to Point Loma) for work, the bike lanes have exponentially made my ride better. I have more space, feel more protected and can focus more on my biking and less on cars.
Where are your favorite places to bike to in San Diego?
I mostly use my bike for commuting to work (North Park to Point Loma) and around the neighborhood for errands. We recently added a bike seat to my bike for our 2-year old; we love family bike rides around the neighborhood.
What makes San Diego a great place to bike?
The weather, the bike lanes and the bike culture.
What's the one thing you think people should know about biking?
It is so much fun!!!
