Ben Mendoza is the Director of Community Empowerment & Deputy Chief of Staff with San Diego City Council President Sean Elo-Rivera.

Ben is a non-binary, queer, Latinx community builder that is passionate about leadership and community engagement work as well as advocating for an intersectional approach to justice. They’ve been a resident of City Heights since August 2013 when they moved to San Diego to attend graduate school at the University of San Diego. Some of their favorite things about City Heights is the rich diversity of the district, amazing food, and beautiful murals around the neighborhoods.

Their passion for community work has led them to serve as a Co-Chair for the Board of the San Diego LGBT Community Center, Co-Chair for the City of San Diego LGBTQ+ Employee Alliance, Assistant Parade Manager for San Diego Pride, Research Advisory Committee member for the Kim Center for Social Balance, and former Board Member of the City Heights Town Council. Ben received their Bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies from Seattle University and a Master of Arts in Higher Education Leadership from the School of Leadership and Education Studies at the University of San Diego.
