Toys for Tots
Councilmember Chris Cate’s Toys for Tots Pancake Breakfast
3rd Annual Toys for Tots event expected to yield 400 toys for military families
On Saturday, December 16, 2017, Councilmember Chris Cate will trade in his suit and tie for gloves and an apron to serve flapjacks at his 3rd Annual Pancake Breakfast. All proceeds from the pancake breakfast will benefit the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program.
From 8:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m., the Mira Mesa Senior Center will welcome children, families, senior citizens, and Santa for a free pancake breakfast. In return, each guest is encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped toy. Last year, more than 350 toys were collected for Toys for Tots.
Toys for Tots: Celebrating 70 Years
Toys for Tots was founded in 1947 by Major Bill Hendricks, USMCR, and expanded into a nationwide community action project in 1948, with Marines at each Reserve Center conducting toy drives.
Since 1947, Toys for Tots has distributed over 530 million toys to over 244 million underprivileged children, with 18 million toys donated in 2016 alone.
Toys for Tots has been recognized nationwide for their philanthropy by numerous organizations such as the Reader’s Digest “America’s Best Children Charity,” and the Forbes “Gold Star List” of charities.
