Book titled 'Courage to Heal', by Paul Bernstein, M.D. Set in a world of iron lungs and the Great Depression, when women and babies are dying in poorly run charity hospitals, Courage to Heal is based on the true story of a young surgeon, Sidney Garfield, who along with industrialist, Henry Kaiser, changes the face of American medicine. It describes Garfield's fight to provide health care to all, eventually co-founding Kaiser-Permanente. Dr. Bernstein is the founder of the Kaiser-Permanente Historical Society.
