Jamacha Waterway Revitalization
Project Background
The Jamacha Waterway Revitalization Project began in 2014 as part of the Chollas Watershed Master Plan, a vision developed by the City of San Diego Stormwater Department to improve local waterway systems. While the project has faced significant funding challenges over the years, it has remained a key priority for the department.
After several delays, the project gained new momentum in 2023 when the department successfully secured a Water Infrastructure Finance & Innovation Act (WIFIA) loan from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This crucial funding has allowed the project to move forward, and it is now in the planning and design phase.
The revitalization of the Jamacha Waterway will increase waterway capacity, improve water quality and restore the area's natural habitat to ensure a safer, cleaner and more sustainable environment for the surrounding community.
Scope of Work
The Jamacha Waterway Revitalization Project will improve stormwater infrastructure between Imperial Avenue and Beacon Drive. The project benefits include blue-green space, water quality improvements, increased waterway capacity, a new multi-purpose trail, and a new pedestrian bridge. The proposed improvements include:
- Upsizing six storm drain culverts
- Waterway improvements
- Installing a multi-purpose path/trail
- Installing a new bridge for access to Marie Widman Park
- Providing green space
- Installing a water quality basin
