From the Office of Council President Joe LaCava
Select Committee on Addressing the Cost of Living Meeting – February 27, 2025 – 9:00 a.m.
Item 1 - Establishing a Minimum Wage for Hotel, Event Center, and Janitorial Service Workers
This item would direct the Council District 9 office to work with the City Attorney’s Office, the Independent Budget Analyst, City staff, and impacted workers and businesses to draft an ordinance that establishes a minimum wage for hotel, event center, and janitorial service workers in the tourism sector.
Item 2 - Grocery Pricing Transparency Ordinance
This item would adopt the proposed Grocery Pricing Transparency Ordinance which requires retail grocery stores that offer digital discounts or coupons to make corresponding paper coupons and pricing available to consumers of identical value.
The proposed City ordinance follows similar proposals in New Jersey, Washington, Illinois, and Massachusetts. It also requires grocery stores to place in a conspicuous location a sign or notice informing customers of their right to printed coupons or clearly readable marked prices if such coupons and prices are offered digitally.
Item 3 - 2025 Select Committee on Addressing Cost of Living Work Plan
The Select Committee on Addressing Cost of Living is a temporary special issues committee with a term of one year. The committee will meet four times in 2025. Attachment A on the agenda represents the Committee’s workplan.
Input from the Committee members and public will be incorporated into the final workplan and inform the Committee’s work throughout the year.
