How to Become a San Diego Lifeguard

Step 1

Apply online before the Lifeguard I recruitment closes.

The Lifeguard I position is open until Jan. 6, 2025.

  • Select the "Lifeguard I - T11079-202306" link.
  • Salary Range: $25.19 - $33.28* per hour (*includes 10% EMT add-on pay)

Step 2

Schedule and attend a performance test.

You must complete a 500-meter swim in Mission Bay at Ventura Cove in 10 minutes or less.

Step 3

Upon passing the performance test, the candidate will be scheduled for an interview on the same day as the performance test.

Step 4

Once selected, the candidate must complete the following:

  • Pass a fingerprint and background check.
  • Pass a medical examination, including a drug test and TB test. The candidate will need to return to the doctor 48 hours after the TB test to have the results read.

Step 5

Upon clearance by Personnel, the candidate will be scheduled for new hire orientation.

Step 6

Upon submission of all certifications and documents listed below, the candidate will be scheduled for bay orientation training.

Certification and Documents required for the Lifeguard I position:

  • Must possess a current American Red Cross Emergency Medical Response certification or equivalent (i.e., Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)) by the start of summer.
  • Must possess a current Basic Life Support for Health Care Provider CPR certification by June 30, 2024. This certification is usually included in the Emergency Medical Response course.
  • You must have proof of completion of “Introduction to Open Water Lifeguarding,” also known as the San Diego Regional Lifeguard Academy, within the last two years. If selected, this 80-hour course is paid training. American Red Cross Emergency Medical Response and Intro to Open Water Lifeguarding are both offered by Miramar College in the spring semester.   • Valid California Driver’s License (an out-of-state driver's license is not accepted).
  • Must be 18 years of age by June 30. You may begin working in Lifeguard operations when you are 18.

NOTE: Candidates must pass an “Ocean Qualifying Test” (OQ) before working at oceanfront stations.

  • Oct. 10, 11, 12, 2024.
  • Jan. 16, 17, 18, 2025.
