The OliverMcMillan I CAN! Center provides services, programs, resources and professional assistance for persons with disabilities in a safe and comfortable environment. Two private study rooms and 16 computers equipped with assistive software, enlarged screens and adjustable-height tables are available to registered users at the OliverMcMillan I CAN! Center. Accessible work stations are also located in selected branches throughout the library system. The Center features ereaders, large print-books, Braille books and other materials, including digital Talking Books for individuals enrolled with the Braille Institute's Library Services.
(A collection of large print books can also be found at any branch library.)
Assistance is generally available when the Central Library is open. For specific questions about I CAN! services, please contact Jason Rogers, Accessibility Services Librarian (JFRogers@sandiego.gov, 619-238-6665).
Adaptive Technology at Central Library
Adaptive Technology at Branch Libraries
The San Diego Public Library offers patrons access to video relay service (VRS). There are two stations available at the Central Library in the OliverMcMillan I CAN! Center, and one station currently available at the Rancho Bernardo Branch Library.
Service Animals are Welcome at the Library
San Diego Public Library welcomes service animals in all of its facilities. The Library recognizes that service animals assist people with disabilities to deal with the effects of their disabilities. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) defines a service animal as "dogs that are individually trained to do work or perform tasks for people with disabilities." However, it also states that "the provision of emotional support, well-being, comfort, or companionship does not constitute work or tasks for the purposes of this definition." Service animals are working animals, not pets. Under ADA regulations, staff may ask if an animal is required because of a disability; they can also ask what work or tasks the animal has been trained to perform.

Services for Homebound Customers
Homebound Services Program
Library materials are delivered and retrieved directly at your door by library staff. Customers who are unable to physically get to the library are eligible for homebound services. Ill-health or disability, certified by a doctor, will signify eligibility. The inability to use public transportation for elderly citizens is also considered as a mobility impairment and a reason for eligibility.
Library-by-Mail Program
This program is specially designed for customers who are homebound and visually impaired (those who cannot read standard size print, even with glasses). Selected items can be delivered to your home via the USPS. Your selection is limited to large print books, audio books or braille books. Materials will arrive free in the mail in a zippered bag. When finished with the materials, simply return them in the same bag, postage free!
